Gift Shop Manager

About the Job...
Retail Gift Shop Managers are working managers! They not only oversee the daily operation of our retail stores located in each hotel or lodge around the park, they spend time on the floor; checking out guests at the register, restocking inventory and engaging shoppers who visit the store.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to Location Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the retail operation at assigned location.
- Maintain proper shop records: reports, transfers, payroll and inventory control.
- Receive direct deliveries from suppliers and processes the necessary documentation, such as invoices. Make certain that paperwork is routed correctly and in a timely manner.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other location departments.
- Inventory control, receiving and merchandise display. Alerts Support Staff to shrinkage, guest problems concerns.
- Schedules, supervises and disciplines gift shop personnel, maintaining proper employee files and providing feedback through evaluations (HIG’s).
- Maintain a good working relationship with Support Staff, Location Manager, co-workers and subordinates.
- Assist the guest and manage inventory by accurately recording purchases on the computer.
- Provide and ensure excellent guest service by adhering and training to Xanterra’s hospitality standards.
- Successfully demonstrate and train good sales techniques by performing suggestive selling and add-on sales. Follow up with staff to ensure add-on sales are occurring.
- Performing cashiering duties properly. Rings up sale before taking money, calls out amount tendered in ‘Dollars and Cents” places bills horizontally under clip, counts back change from amount due to amount tendered.
- Stock product as necessary, make sure all displays are kept stocked, neat and clean within the guidelines of the Retail Merchandising Manual.
- Ensure a safe work area. Keeping the sales floor clean, this includes sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and trash removal.
- Give accurate helpful information to Yellowstone Park Visitors.
- Comply with Yellowstone’s Environmental Management Systems (Ecologix) and look for ways to improve the impact your job has on the environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Perform all duties of a Sales Associate. Be accurate with cash handling, daily reporting procedures and inventory control: able to coach employees to maintain high and consistent standards in the gift shop.
- Thorough understanding of a retail operation in a high traffic seasonal situation.
- Must be able to induce cooperation between different age levels existing in the gift shop; work well with all staff members.
- Should have a basic knowledge and understanding of souvenirs, gifts, jewelry and other products sold within Yellowstone National Park.
- Minimum amount of supervision needed; excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Uses accurate product information in pursuing professional sales techniques.
- Maintains full and neat display areas with attention to pilferage prevention.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to stand/walk for a minimum eight-hour shift.
- Frequently lift and carry cartons weighing up to 50 lbs
- Carry boxes/product up and down stairs at most locations several times a day.
- Must be able to bend down or kneel to stock product frequently during a shift.
AUTHORITIES:
- Maintain gift shop hours and adhering to opening and closing procedures.
- Represents the Retail Department in dealing with guest problems and concerns.
- Determine personnel schedules and payroll; delegate and supervise shop assignments.
- Discipline employees, as needed, within the guidelines of Company policy.
