Employee Life in Grant Village

As village locations go, Grant is spread out.

Approximately 100 Grant employees live in Grayling Dormitory sharing a room with one or two roommates. Bathroom facilities are located either in the dorm room or shared between two rooms.

Other employees live in cabins. Each cabin contains four rooms, with each room housing its own bathroom for two occupants. Laundry facilities are located in the dormitory.

There are two employee trailer parks at Grant Village. One RV park is close to Grayling, while the other is 3/4 mile up the road. Click Here for more information about bringing your RV to Yellowstone.

All employee housing is a notable distance from work/guest areas and other employee areas on location. Lighted boardwalks have been built between residence areas and guest areas to help employees get around.

Remember to bring a flashlight, rain gear, mosquito repellent, and a warm jacket.  With its lakeside location, Grant is known for dew-covered mornings and chilly nights. This is a good place to bring your bicycle...but don't forget your helmet!

The employee pub provides a place to gather after hours. There is no recreation hall on location, however, exercise equipment, a pool table, piano and ping-pong table, and a community lounge area are located in Grayling Dormitory.

There you will also find the Co-Op Recreation Program. Co-op Recreation Staff schedule van trips to local attractions and towns, hiking trips, white water rafting, big-screen movies, dances and live music.

The Employee Dining Room (EDR) is located in the guest dining building and is a bit of a walk from the residence area.

The Grant Campground does not open until late June every year, which creates a short summer for those employees.  But, why so late?

Grant Village is located in prime grizzly habitat. In late May and early June, cutthroat trout spawn in the five streams that flow through the Grant Village area.

The trout are an important food source for the grizzly bear population during this time of year. To help prevent any bear/human conflict, the campground does not open until the spawn is nearly over.

There is just something about Grant Village that draws employees back year after year. Grant is off the beaten path, yet just two hours north of Jackson, Wyoming with Grand Teton National Park in between.

Grant Village provides access to Lewis and Shoshone Lakes, where fishing and canoing are at their best.

About West Thumb Basin

Just a couple of miles from the Grant Village turnoff is West Thumb Basin. Boardwalks take you through the volcanic thermal area that features hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pots; all right at the edge of Yellowstone Lake!

One famous feature of West Thumb Basin is the Fishing Cone hot spring, which sits partially submerged in the waters of the lake. In early days of tourism, visitors would catch fish on a hook and dip their catch into the spring to cook up tasty delights in sulfur based mineral water (Yuck!).

West Thumb Basin is a great place to watch the weather change on the lake, eat a picnic lunch and see wildlife wander by. The basin is the first stop on a 21-mile tour around the edge of Yellowstone Lake, where you will find scenic byways, picnic turnouts and hiking trailheads.
Summer comes and goes quickly at Grant Village.
